The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), along with the waste management company Eco Recycling Limited or Ecoreco, has set up an e-waste collection centre at the junction of Mithibai College in Vile Parle (W). It is the first in a series of 24 such centres across the city and was inaugurated by additional municipal commissioner Pallavi Darade on Friday. The project has been undertaken on public-private partnership (PPP) basis.
The centre will facilitate collection of hazardous e-waste and its disposal in an environment-friendly manner. Meanwhile the 24 proposed collection centres across 24 civic wards will be supported by thousands of collection bins, placed in spiritual and educational places. The arrangement would help in three ways – these eco-bins and accumulated e-waste will remain safe at these places, the eco-bins will develop awareness about e-waste and people frequently visiting these places can deposit their e-waste without walking the extra mile.
"We are delighted to partner with Ecoreco, India's pioneering e-waste management company. Mumbai needs systematic channels for e-waste disposal as it is the highest e-waste generating city in the country. Not only the collection of e-waste, but its scientific disposal needs attention. Owing to its expertise in the field, Ecoreco came to our support to find a solution to the problem. Under this partnership, we will facilitate Ecoreco collection centres in the city. I urge the people of Mumbai to extensively use these centres to dispose of their e-waste, " said Darade.
Chairman and managing director of Ecoreco, BK Soni, said, "In the present scenario, where environment conscious people are forced to retain their e-waste at home or offices because of the lack of pollution-free system in place, we are thankful to the BMC for conceptualising this idea and selecting Ecoreco to implement it. This is the first centre to begin with. Going forward, we will make such centres available in all wards of the city for the convenience of general public and environment conscious entities."
